Visual Arts with Mrs. Royal

Welcome
Welcome to THS Art where creativity, imagination, and innovation are celebrated daily.  Art is my passion and I am excited to share my knowledge of various art techniques with the students of Thomasville High School.  I am a proud alumnus of Thomasville High School.  I am also a graduate of Western Carolina University with a B.S.ED in Art. Since graduating from college in 2004 I have spent my entire career here at THS.  I am the 2015 Teacher of the Year for both THS and for Thomasville City Schools.  Here at Thomasville we currently offer four levels of art education: Beginning Art, Intermediate Art, Proficient Art, and Advanced Art.  Advanced Art can be repeated up to four times for those students passionate about art and considering continuing their education in art beyond high school; possibly an art career.  The additional courses are for portfolio building.  Thomasville High School offers a variety of after school clubs and organizations for THS students.  I personally serve as the adviser for the Art Club.  Art Club officially meets once a week, however many students come together to work after school daily in the art room.  Students are offered extended work time in the art room on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school from 3:20-4:20pm.  I would like to personally invite you to view our students framed artwork on display in administration building hallways.  We also have several murals around campus designed and painted by the Art Club.

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you for selecting Art as one of your electives at Thomasville High School.  I hope this course will serve as a resource for your development in creative thinking and the visual problem solving progress.  My desire is for all students to increase their artistic expression and skill level.

Students are expected to complete all art projects that they are assigned each nine weeks.  Students are also required to turn in a sketchbook.  Sketchbooks serve as homework assignments in this course and each drawing should take around 15-30 minutes to complete.  Art students will be given an assignment to complete in their sketchbook each week.  Your child will need a 24 or 36 pack of color pencils.  All other materials are provided, therefore, you do not need to purchase any other materials for this class. Each art student will be assigned an art box full of art supplies as a loan.  The students are responsible for the supplies assigned to them and will be additionally charged if they damage, brake, or misplace their supplies.  As long as each of these items is returned in working condition there will be no charges or fines.

Elective courses are an excellent opportunity to boost student GPA. This course is designed so that all students can receive an A+.  I have heard the question many times, “How can someone fail art?”  The answer is simple; if a student has too many absences or fails to complete assignments (class-work, or sketchbook); then in these instances a zero is averaged into their grade for all missing assignments.  Every four weeks you should receive a progress report in each of your classes.  I am very diligent in this area for my classes. Grades are updated weekly in the Infinite Campus portal.  Anytime you have any question of how your child is doing, simply log on and you can see their average.  Therefore, report cards are no shock, both the student and myself know exactly how they are performing in class from day to day. There is an art exam at the end of the course that will count 20% of your child’s final grade.  Students in good academic standing and attendance may be exempt from the final exam.  You will receive a report card every nine weeks.

******Attendance, Attitude, and Effort go along with the daily participation.

My desire is for all students to be successful.  I hope this letter will help in your understanding of my expectations.  I am sending this letter along with a detailed responsibilities listing.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at school.  I am available during my planning period, which is from 8:00-9:00 am or reach me after school between the times of 3:30pm and 4:00pm. You may also email me through the school website which may yield a quicker response [email protected].

Thank you, Sig 1

Rewards

Each month that the class has less than 2 office referrals, then the class is rewarded as a whole by receiving a class party.  Each student will be responsible for bringing one snack i.e. cookie, chips, drink or etc.  The class will eat snacks and enjoy an animated film.  Mrs. Royal will provide plates, cups, napkins and the film.

Parents,

Today your child received their Art course syllabus and responsibility listings and expectations.  For homework students are required to draw in their sketchbooks weekly for 15-30 minutes.  Homework will be taken up every Thursday.  Drawing in the sketchbook is a form of practice and should improve their hand eye coordination and drawing skills.  Students cannot increase their skill if they are not practicing.  Your signature on this form lets me know that you have read this syllabus and understand my expectations for art class.  Please contact me if you have any questions. Your child’s grades will be uploaded and average weekly.  You may check their grade status as often as you like using Infinite Campus.
